The Club at Savannah Harbor

by | Oct 16, 2022 | Where to Play

The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Georgia, has reopened following a five-month, $1.2 million renovation. The renovation, led by Director of Grounds Lynn Childress and his team, focused on rebuilding greens and improving the course’s irrigation and drainage systems. Georgia-based Godwin Golf was the contractor on the project.

Since The Club at Savannah Harbor opened in 1999, the golf course has received a four-star rating from Golf Digest for “Highly Recommended Places to Play.” Conde Nast Traveler also ranks it among the Top 100 Golf Courses in America. The original Bob Cupp and Sam Snead design has largely remained unchanged. The renovation project included rebuilding all 18 greens to their original size and shape, resurfacing with Certified TifEagle Bermuda grass, and installing a new state-of-the-art irrigation system. In addition, the Club at Savannah Harbor’s agronomy team completed large drainage projects and cut tree canopies on several holes to increase playability and enhance the ability to grow healthy turf.

“After 22 years, the course was ready for renovation. We were so excited to reopen in September to a fully-updated course,” said The Club at Savannah Harbor’s Head Golf Professional, Chris Thompson.

Renovation facts:

  • 112,500 feet of wire (21 miles)
  • 1,300 tons of greens mix (52 semi-truck loads)
  • 11,000 feet of 3” HDPE pipe just over 2 miles for irrigation
  • Seven semi-loads of Bermuda sod for around the greens

The Club at Savannah Harbor’s golf course winds its way through the tidal wetlands offering scenic views of the surrounding area. The former home to the PGA TOUR Champions’ Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf Championship is nestled between the banks of the Savannah and Back Rivers of the splendid Georgia Low Country.
