Bernhard and Jason Langer Win the PNC Championship by a Three-Shot Margin
66-year-old Bernard Langer, and his son, Jason, proved too much Sunday, winning the PNC Championship in Orlando. Team Langer fired a 13 under par 59 on payday, one better than Saturday’s opening round 60, to overcome a three-shot deficit and bypass Matt Kuchar and his son, Cameron, who began the day the team to beat.
The Langer’s opened with three straight birdies to erase the Kuchar’s first-round lead and draw even.
“I was just enjoying watching my son hole putt after putt and hitting great shot after great shot,” said Langer.
The winning team carded birdies on their first seven holes and 10 of their first 11.
“It was like a dream. It was incredible. I have seen a lot of great golf in my life and watching him today was unbelievable,” said the two-time Masters Champion and seemingly ageless wonder.
Another trio of birdies over the last seven holes saw Bernhard and Jason finish 25 under par and roll to a two-shot victory over David and Brady Duval.
The field battled two days of windy conditions as the much-anticipated pairing of Tiger and Charlie Woods finished in a five-way tie for fifth place at minus 19. Team Woods opened with an eight-under-par performance on the Ritz Carlton Club, and the duo birdied five of their last six holes to card an 11-under-par 61 in the final round.
Still the day belonged to the Langer who captured his fifth PNC title to tie Raymond Floyd for most of all.
It’s an amazing event, I always call it the fifth major,” added Langer. “It truly is the best event outside some of the major tournaments we play in just because it is all about family. To have the opportunity to play with your son or daughter and show them the ropes in this thing we do day after day is just amazing. Most people can’t do that and to do that with other legends, other greats of the game and be paired with the many wonderful teams here and meet their families and grandkids it is incredible.”
Langer also won with Jason in 2014 and 2019. The other two victories came back to back in 2005 and 2006 with his other son Stefan.
Defending champion Team Singh, Vijay, and Qass, finished at 22-under for third place after posting 62 in the final round.
The PNC Championship is a two-day, 36-hole tournament that utilizes a two-person team Scramble format. A member of each of the 20 teams has won at least one major title (PGA TOUR, LPGA, or PGA TOUR Champions) or THE PLAYERS Championship title, while the family member playing partner does not hold status on any professional tour.
