After a two-and-a-half-year intensive course renovation, San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, CA., has reopened for daily-fee play. Developer Third Millennium Partners oversaw the project from start to finish, with insights from golf architect Gene Bates – designer of the original course in 1996, along with World Golf Hall of Fame member Fred Couples, who returned to modernize the layout in January 2022.
“San Juan Oaks Golf Club’s transformation marks a complete rebirth of our valued course and facilities, embodying meticulous planning from the first tee to the clubhouse,” said San Juan Oaks Golf Club General Manager Manny Freitas. “Enhanced for playability and sustainability, our course seamlessly blends with the natural beauty of the San Juan Valley. Whether enjoying a round of golf or dining, expect an extraordinary experience reflecting our commitment to becoming Northern California’s premier golf and social destination. With a 28-year legacy, our 18-hole championship course promises an unparalleled golfing journey, inviting players to immerse themselves in the artistry of the game.”
The restoration involved regrassing the entire course, including tees and fairways with perennial ryegrass, 007XL bentgrass on the greens and new drought-resistant Bermuda grass on the practice range. Installation of a new pump station and irrigation system reduces overwatering and achieves better playing conditions. The renovated course plays to a par of 72, reaching 7,071 yards from tips and 4,771 yards from the forward tees. Additionally, there are new practice facilities and multiple short-game areas.
The San Juan Oaks master plan features a completely remodeled and expanded clubhouse with a pro shop, meeting and event spaces, event lawn, bocce ball courts and new dining opportunities, including McCann’s, a casual lounge, patio seating and Golfer’s Grind coffee shop; Slices, a grab-and-go snack shack accessible from the course; and 36 Degrees North, a signature dining experience. With scenic views of the hills and golf course all around, it’s the perfect setting to taste, enjoy and take in the idyllic location.
In addition to course and clubhouse improvements, Third Millennium Partners constructed roads, sidewalks and infrastructure for the new 55+ resort community adjacent to the course, Trilogy San Juan Oaks, which will have its model home grand opening on Oct. 12.
Located 26 miles northeast of Monterey Bay between historic San Juan Bautista and charming Hollister, Trilogy San Juan Oaks is Shea Homes’ sixth 55+ community in Northern California. It offers nine single-story new home designs and an approximately 20,000-square-foot planned clubhouse featuring a wellness and fitness center, pickleball courts, an indoor pool, and a variety of spaces for social engagement among neighbors.
