Puerto Rico’s commitment to protecting its culture and environment includes encouraging visitors to adopt eco-friendly practices, nurturing the Island’s status as one of the most biodiverse places on earth.
With incredible flora and fauna – from El Yunque Rainforest to rare bioluminescent bays – Puerto Rico is an extraordinary place to rest, recharge, and immerse in the tranquility and wonder that safeguarding nature provides.
Discover Puerto Rico, the Island’s Destination Marketing Organization, recently announced The Green Path, a program that helps people respect and support responsible tourism through a series of eco-friendly practices. These support local businesses and help ensure a sustainable future through certifying people who complete four learning modules. Achieving certification unlocks exclusive travel perks and celebrates bolstering Puerto Rico’s natural and cultural preservation.

Mirroring the proactive and environmentally conscious initiatives undertaken by Discover Puerto Rico, several island golf courses are increasingly dedicating substantial resources to adopting and promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable best practices.
For instance, notable venues such as Fort Buchanan Golf Club, St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort and Golf Club, and Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest Golf & Beach Resort, specifically their River Course, have all become active participants in Monarchs in the Rough. This program, led by Audubon International, is a comprehensive habitat-building initiative designed to support and enhance the breeding and migratory pathways of monarch butterflies.
By converting areas of golf courses that were previously underutilized or unsuitable for traditional turf maintenance into ecologically rich sanctuaries, these courses are creating vital habitats for pollinators. The project aims to support the monarch butterfly populations, which are currently threatened by habitat loss and climate change, by restoring native plants and creating safe spaces along key migration corridors.
This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of Puerto Rican golf courses not only to sustainable land management and environmental conservation but also to serving as critical nodes in broader ecological networks that benefit both local ecosystems and global biodiversity.
Furthermore, both the golf course and resort at Bahia Beach have achieved independent certification from Audubon International, a globally recognized organization dedicated to promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
These prestigious certifications acknowledge their exemplary efforts in conservation, wildlife preservation, and environmentally responsible management.
Additionally, these certifications serve as a testament to their ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards of environmental stewardship, ensuring the preservation of natural habitats and promoting sustainable tourism in the region.
The recognition from such a reputable organization also enhances their reputation and demonstrates their leadership in environmental sustainability within the hospitality and recreation industries.
“We designed The Green Path as a modern approach to education and engagement,” said Dalissa Zeda, Digital Marketing Director at Discover Puerto Rico. “By making sustainability personal and actionable, we’re helping visitors align their values with their vacation plans, fostering more meaningful travel experiences while supporting the long-term well-being of our Island. That our golf courses are actively joining in this crucial cause means one of our key tourism niches understands the importance of green practices and proactivity.”
