The Folds of Honor Legacy Cup to be hosted by Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Apple Rock Course

Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Horseshoe Bay Resort is set to host an extraordinary event that combines the love of golf with a heartfelt mission to honor and support military families. On October 28, 2024, the resort’s Apple Rock Course will be the inaugural Folds of Honor Legacy Cup venue.

The Folds of Honor Legacy Cup

The Folds of Honor Legacy Cup is a fundraising event dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of our nation’s fallen soldiers and first responders. It will feature an 18-hole, four-person tournament format, allowing participants to enjoy a day of competitive golf while contributing to a noble cause. The event includes lunch, tee prizes, silent and live auctions, a post-tournament reception, drinks on the course, and an awards ceremony featuring a Folds of Honor family.

Founded in 2007 by Lt Col Dan Rooney, the only F-16 fighter pilot to be a PGA of America Golf Professional, the Folds of Honor has awarded 44,000 scholarships to military spouses and children, totaling roughly $200 million in all 50 states. Among the students served, 41 percent have been minorities. It is rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and Platinum on GuideStar.

Ron Doherty and Steve Wilkins, members of The Club at Horseshoe Bay Resort, made bringing the Legacy Cup to Horseshoe Bay Resort possible. They wanted to support the worthwhile efforts of The Folds of Honor and help establish an unforgettable event that would hopefully endure for many years and raise awareness for the needs of military families.

The tournament’s slate of events includes a special presentation by guest speaker Pamela Kendall, wife of the late United States Air Force Chief Master Sergeant William Kendall (a decorated Airman who was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in 2012 and lost his life after 30 years of military service in 2016), before play. Folds of Honor provided scholarships to Kendall’s sons, erasing worry about school expenses. Her oldest son, Christian, recently graduated from the University of Utah with a marketing degree and is a fellow Folds of Honor speaker. Kendall’s youngest son studies film and music production at the University of Utah. Folds of Honor has given the Kendall family a sense of community that shares a common loss and common strength.

Kendall’s presentation will be followed by the Color Guard’s 21-Ball Salute and a jet flyover. Immediately following lunch, a shotgun, four-person scramble format tournament will begin at 12:30 p.m. PGA TOUR Champions players Rich Beem (2002 PGA Championship winner) and Wes Short Jr. will be at par-three holes, greeting and cheering on players. Afterward, there will be an awards dinner with raffle items, a silent auction, and a live auction.

“The amazing work done by the Folds of Honor and Lt. Col. Dan Rooney is important and inspirational,” said Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Director of Golf Operations, Anthony Holder. “It is a distinct privilege to host the Legacy Cup and play a part in fundraising and building awareness for the vital impact the Folds of Honor has on deserving military families. Our chance to pay forward our gifts and good fortune we have received to honor service members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice is very meaningful to our team and our members. We look forward to welcoming everyone who participates in this special event.”

A Premier Golfing Destination

Horseshoe Bay Resort is renowned for its world-class amenities and breathtaking landscapes. Apple Rock, the third Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course built at Horseshoe Bay Resort, opened in 1985 to rave reviews, including “Best New Resort Courses in America” by Golf Digest. This spectacular course is touted as one of the most scenic championship golf courses in Texas. Spanning 147 acres, RTJ, Sr. used some of the highest, most picturesque land in Horseshoe Bay for the layout.

A Day of Golf and Giving Back

Participants in the Legacy Cup will not only enjoy a day of golf on the beautiful Apple Rock Course but also have the chance to engage in various activities that support the cause. The silent and live auctions offer unique items and experiences, while the post-tournament reception provides an opportunity to celebrate the day’s events and connect with fellow golfers and supporters.
