If you ask the everyday golfer, the weekend warrior, what is the one thing they would like to do better on the golf course? When I arrived for my appointment at Club Champion, the first thing I noticed was the cleanliness and the face-masks, without a doubt this facility was adhering to CDC guidelines on sanitization.
Once inside I met Jay, my Master Fitter and we spent a few minutes just talking about golf. He wanted to know what I enjoyed about playing and what my current tendencies were. He wanted to know what I was looking for in a Hybrid and what my expectations were. He was truly interested in knowing what I wanted out of my game, not in just selling me a hybrid. Jay made me feel very comfortable, he was easy to talk to and explained everything we would be doing. No pressure whatsoever.
Jay had me loosen up by hitting my 8-iron, then I moved on to my current hybrid. After a few minutes, he told me he had seen enough and had some recommendations on shafts. He came back with 3 shafts and 2 heads and told me we would do 3 shots with each. “The process starts with finding the right shaft, you must get the shaft right and then get the head right.”
In just a few minutes, he had me in a shaft that he told me was looking really good by the numbers that the industry leading TrackMan was providing. I told him I wasn’t an expert on interpreting the numbers but I could certainly agree with him based on results I was seeing on the simulator and the feel.
We both felt really good about the shaft, so now it was time to find the right head to go with it. Jay gave me another break and came back in a few minutes with two handfuls of heads. We did the same drill, three shots with each head. I refused to ask or even look at the logo on the head, I wanted results, not brand recognition. After hitting all of the heads, he told me he had me narrowed down to the top two, but wanted to know if my feel matched what TrackMan said. “It’s not all just TrackMan, you have to be happy with the feel and results as well.”
Believe me, when I tell you I was happy. I was hitting the combination consistently right at 200 yards in a 15 yard circle with a slight draw with a ball height averaging 103 feet just right of center, over and over again. These were the kind of results I was looking for.
In my mind, I was done. I had been fitted with the right combination, but, no, Jay wasn’t done with me. He wanted to try one more shaft, the same shaft in a slightly different flex just to prove he had it right. So, one more time of 3 hits with each combination. After this we were sure, it was the original combination (see below) that was the right fit for me.
With over 45,000 head and shaft combinations, this process could go on for hours, but the entire process was quick and efficient. Jay was able to use his knowledge, keen eye and TrackMan to pick the best combination and had me custom fitted in about 90 minutes.
Waiting on the club to be delivered will be the hardest part. Since this is a custom fitted club and it has to go through the Club Champion PURE Process, you don’t get to walk out the door with your club(s) the same day. I’m sure the wait will be worth it.
