For the fifth straight year, Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville is hosting the PGA Tour Champions in the Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS presented by Circle K.
This weekend’s 54-hole event tournament will take place at Timuquana Country Club, a par-72, 7,005-yard course. Rocco Mediate is the defending champion on a layout he’s more than familiar with.
“Timuquana is awesome. It’s a relatively new course; it’s only 102 now, so it’s relatively new. Ross gem, it’s great. I mean, not because of last year. I played here years and years ago when I lived here; it’s magnificent. The fact that Jimmy got us the tournament here is cool, very cool.”
Mediate has faced challenges since winning here a year ago, but claims he has been working on it, as evidenced by his strong showing in Thursday’s final practice round.
“One, can you do it on the range? Check. Two, can you do it when you play like today? Check. Three, can you do it on Friday in a tournament? I’m not sure yet…Four, can you do it with a chance to win? Would love to check that off too shortly. So, I’m halfway. We’ll see tomorrow. Everything’s good.”
The top three players in the Charles Schwab Cup standings are set to tee off here as the season-long race heats up: No. 1 Miguel Angel Jiménez, No. 2 Stewart Cink, and No. 3 Steven Alker.
Tournament host Jim Furyk will make his first start on PGA TOUR Champions since the 2024 event, coming off a hectic week as Vice-Captain to Keegan Bradley and the U.S. Ryder Cup team, which lost in New York last weekend.
This event will be the last staged here, as it will relocate 68 miles south to Hammock Beach and the stunning Jack Nicklaus-designed Ocean Course in 2026.
“We talked about this year being a celebration. Timaquana gave us the ability to start this event, gain some traction, voted players’ favorite event, voted best event on Tour by the PGA TOUR (Champions). Much of that was due to this golf course, and the staff here has been incredible,” said Furyk. “We’re sad in one sense but also want to celebrate what we’ve been able to achieve here. We’ll move forward and focus on Hammock Beach, an amazing venue.”
The five World Golf Hall of Fame members in the field include Vijay Singh, Davis Love III, Jose Maria Olazabal, Colin Montgomerie, and Retief Goosen, who won three weeks ago in South Dakota.
61-year-old Love has participated in every one of Furyk’s tournaments since the beginning, despite facing several serious health issues, including open-heart surgery in January.
“Jim and I were laughing last week at the Ryder Cup that if we play it’s going to be an experiment,” Love said of the tournament host, who has had hip replacement surgery in the spring.”
The PGA Tour Champions field is chasing a first prize of $315,000 from a $2.1 million purse.
