Scottie Scheffler secured his 18th PGA TOUR victory, and fifth this season, at the BMW Championship, the second leg of the three-event FedEx Cup Playoffs.
The World No. 1 is the first since Tiger Woods (2005-2007) to notch five or more wins in two consecutive years.
“It’s been a nice stretch the last few years and I’ve done some really good things. It’s nice to get the results from a lot of hard work,” Scheffler said. That’s not something I think about day-to-day. I try to approach everything week by week, and when you really boil down to it, just day by day. This week was a good week. It was a battle all the way through, fortunate to be sitting here.”
Scheffler’s final-round 67 rallied him past Robert MacIntyre, who began Sunday atop the leaderboard. MacIntyre’s cushion vanished with a back-to-back bogey start, then another on the fifth hole to go three-over.
“I wasn’t even expecting to be over par, to be honest. I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I have the last couple days,” MacIntyre said.
At the same time, this year’s PGA and Open Championship winner birdied the first, bogeyed the fifth himself, but then has a marvelous chip-in birdie on the par-3 17th to seal the victory.
“Part of me wanted to go at the pin, and I kind of held off there on the left side. I knew par wasn’t going to be a bad score on that hole today,” Scheffler said. “Anytime you hole a chip like that, it’s pretty nice. It looked good when it landed, looked good when it was rolling, and it was nice to see that one go in.”
Scheffler closed with par on 18 to finish 15-under for the week at Caves Valley—his 17th straight sub-par round. He played without his usual caddie; Michael Cromie filled in for Ted Scott, away for a family emergency.
“Ted is at home with his family, and he’s where he’s supposed to be. We’re praying for them, and his family is doing all right. Cromie did a great job this week,” Scheffler added. “It’s not easy stepping in and trying to fill in for Ted. Those are some big shoes to fill, but he did a great job. Him and Ted are good buddies, and I’m really thankful to have him on the bag this week. It was a lot of fun.”
