The LPGA International Jones Course is a hidden gem in Daytona Beach, Florida. Â Home to the Ladies Professional Golf Association and two world-class golf courses, the Jones and the (Arthur) Hills courses. Undoubtedly both courses offer an excellent experience for vacationing and local golfers looking for variety and a challenge.
Rees Jones
As the name suggests, the Jones Course was designed by architect Rees Jones, whose portfolio includes Pinehurst No. 7, Nantucket Golf Club, as well as a renovation of Torrey Pines. With large expanses of bunkers, undulating greens, and an open layout, Jones has created a signature links-style golf course that offers an excellent challenge for golfers of any skill level.
In typical Rees Jones style, the 7,088-yard design is fair, challenging, visually appealing, and always interesting to play. Generally, a golfer can either use caution and avoid the hazards or “go for it” and flirt with trouble. Those willing to take the risk will be rewarded with multiple options on nearly every shot.
Intelligently Placed Bunkers
Intelligently placed bunkers on nearly every hole of the LPGA International Jones Course seem to be in the correct position to penalize players with a wayward tee shot.
A prime example is the opening hole. With a water hazard running down the left side of the par-4, the natural tendency is to play to the right side of the fairway. Â However, anything too far right will put you in one of those sand bunkers.
LPGA International Jones Course Number 1 Handicap
Beware of the 576-yard par-5 13th, the No. 1 handicap hole of the Jones Course. Hitting this green in two is not something that most golfers will be able to do, not even the long-hitters. It will take three accurate, strategic shots for a chance at birdie. Not only do you have to be aware of the bunkers down the right side of the hole, but large mounds down the left side can make a second or third shot less than ideal. Furthermore, the approach to the green is by no means straightforward, with a water hazard and bunker guarding the right side of the green. This gives the hole a superb links feel while making it one of the most challenging holes on the course.
Birdie Opportunities
The LPGA International Jones Course par-3s will give you opportunities to gain some ground back. Each of the par-3s plays fairly straightforwardly and, given a good tee shot, can offer decent looks at birdie. As with any links course, a strong breeze can change the dynamic of a short par-3.
