Spaun Wins Texas Open by 1 Shot

by | Apr 5, 2026 | Pro News

J.J. Spaun delivered another clutch performance at TPC San Antonio, firing a final‑round 67 to win the Valero Texas Open by one shot and continue a remarkable run of form that now includes three PGA Tour victories — highlighted by his breakthrough win at the 2025 U.S. Open.

The victory came in classic Texas Open fashion: swirling winds, intermittent rain, and a leaderboard packed with challengers. But Spaun, a PUMA Golf athlete, leaned on a red‑hot putter and unwavering confidence to post rounds of 69‑69‑66‑67 for a 17‑under total. The win also marks his second career triumph at TPC San Antonio, where he first broke through in 2022.

“We’re very happy for J.J. and incredibly proud of him,” said Russ Kahn, senior vice president of Cobra Puma Golf. “His U.S. Open win last year was inspiring, and his ability to fight through challenging conditions and outlast a strong field this weekend shows the confidence and momentum he continues to build on Tour. We look forward to many more victories with J.J. in PUMA Golf apparel and footwear.”

Strong Finish Key to Spaun’s Texas Open Victory

Spaun’s closing stretch once again showcased the aggressive mindset fueling his rise. On the 198‑yard par‑3 16th, he stuffed his tee shot to inside four feet and rolled in the birdie to pull within striking distance. Then came the defining moment at the drivable par‑4 17th. Sitting one shot back, Spaun chose driver over 3‑wood, trusting a 90‑percent swing that mirrored the image he carried from Oakmont during his U.S. Open win. The ball landed just short of the green, released to inside 10 feet, and he buried the eagle putt to take the lead for good.

“I knew I was one back and wanted to stay aggressive,” Spaun said. “I had a flash of my tee shot at Oakmont last year on 17 on Sunday. It was a nice image to have before pulling the trigger.”

Robert MacIntyre, who began the day with a one‑shot lead, answered with an eagle of his own at 17 to keep the pressure on. But after missing a 30‑foot birdie attempt on the par‑5 18th, he settled for a closing 70 and a share of second place alongside Matt Wallace (68) and Michael Kim (69). Despite the near miss, MacIntyre acknowledged the challenge of putting in the shifting winds, noting that several promising rolls simply never held their lines.

Trusting His Gear in Tough Conditions

The weekend’s weather — wet turf, gusting winds, and unpredictable footing — made equipment choice a meaningful storyline. Spaun credited his PUMA Golf setup for providing the stability and comfort he needed to stay aggressive.

“Winning in weather conditions like we saw this weekend takes patience and trust in your gear, and my PUMA Golf apparel and shoes played a key role,” Spaun said. “Feeling comfortable in bad weather and knowing you can trust your traction let me fully focus on competing. I’m proud to share this win with my PUMA Golf family.”

Throughout the week, Spaun wore IGNITE ELEVATE 2 Tour footwear — a model built for Tour‑level traction and all‑day comfort. The IGNITE ELEVATE line features PUMA’s proprietary midsole foam for energy return and responsive cushioning, and is available in three models (Tour, 2, and X) to suit different golfers’ preferences.

A Career Trending Upward

With the win, Spaun cements his position among the top 10 players in the World Golf Rankings and continues to strengthen his case for the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup team. His Texas Open triumph also marks a sharp turnaround from a slow start to the season, where he missed four cuts in seven events.

“This game is so crazy,” Spaun said. “I put a lot of pressure on myself early this year. Getting back to the mindset that helped me last season has been huge.”

Ludvig Åberg added another top‑10 finish at the Texas Open, while Andrew Putnam narrowly missed a playoff after a bogey at the last. But the week belonged to Spaun — a player whose confidence, ball‑striking, and trust in his equipment continue to elevate him into golf’s elite.
